Sounds around town... with Shaun Buswell

OKAY, lots going on this week, and never enough space, so I’ll keep this brief.

I’m gonna mention lots of different styles today. I’d love to explain more about post-hardcore, screamo, krautrock, electro-metal, garage blues, pop punk, electronica, folkrock, post-rock, dubstep... but I just don’t have the space.

Anyway, some of these genres are great, and awesome music. And some of these genres are rubbish, ear-faeces drivel. I’m not saying which is which!

So it’s a lottery this week. No space to go into further detail I’m afraid. I’ll just leave it up to you to decide by actually going to a few gigs and writing to let me know whether they stank or shone.

Saturday, July 18 - Gig of the week for me is at 12 Bar, in Westcott Place, for a Wild West themed charity fundraiser in aid of Goldenhars Syndrome. YEEHAW! Acts are The Sweet Plums, The Visitors, Silhouette Showgirls and comedy troupe The Liquid Pearls. Oh, and Rick The Magician. Magic. Just what you need to round off a night of music is a little sprinkle of magic here and there.

And for only £5 - going to a great charity as well. This is gonna be a great event.

However, if you’d rather go for something a little more “European”, then check out the UK’s best Rammstein tribute act Völkerstein playing at The Vic.

This promises to be a really good show and, with Vivaxi as support, good value at only £3.

Along with Syntronix (80s Tribute Band) at Riffs Bar and Fry (rock and blues trio) at The Rolleston, there’s garage hard-rock blues at The Furnace where you can see GMT (Guy, McCoy and Torme) with support from Mofo and Gwyn Ashton’s Two-Man Blues Army.

Tuesday, July 21 - Tonight sees fun and laughter at 12 Bar for Jokers, the Ocelot’s Comedy Club. Three great comedians and a compere, all for the price of nothing. Nada. Nowt. Yup, it’s free!

Wednesday, July 22 - Vivaxi return for a second gig this week by playing Riffs Bar with The Ashun and Echo Silence. A good slice of indie and metal for free.

Thursday, July 23 - Elkie Brooks. Nuff said. She’s playing The Wyvern Theatre on Thursday. Tickets are £21.

If you’re a fan of Fugazi-fuelled hardcore, then you’ve got a bit of a dilemma tonight – The Furnace or The 12 Bar?

At the Furnace you’ve got No Turning Back, Sioux and True Valiance. Yet at the 12 Bar you’ve got Young Guns with support from None The Less and Disclosure. Ooh, what you gonna do, hardcore kiddies?!

If neither Elkie or the hardcore shows are rocking your boat, how about some blues rock? The Persuaders play at The Rolleston. It’s free too. No? What about some acoustic goodness at The Vic with Emma Payn, Nick & Eve and Darren Matthews.

Friday, July 24 - Pop Rock Screamo act Cure The Disaster play the Furnace tonight. Don’t expect a mix of Kylie, Led Zep and Janet Leigh though. Tickets are £5 in advance. Other gigs of note are Hot Fuss (a Killer Tribute) at The 12 Bar, Ulysses and Nicole Fermie Trio at The Vic, and Jongleurs Comedy Club at the Wyvern Theatre.

Tune in next week for information on the awesome Mela Festival, and lots more to boot.
