The emergence of a new generation of talented female singers has brought jazz music out of the shadows recently.
Canadian jazz artist Tammy Weis, who appears at the Theatre Royal Bath next Saturday, February 27, as part of her nationwide tour, is another of the new breed and has an impressive musical pedigree.
You could almost say she was born to sing, as she was named after Country & Western icon Tammy Wynette.
Her new album Where I Need To Be is released on Thursday.
A collection of mainly original numbers that draw on her past experiences, the album is a personal reflection of her life since moving to London.
She says her concepts will be familiar to any listener, and I felt most of the lyrical and musical themes would be too, with rippling piano riffs a-plenty and some charming, but not always outstanding, performances.
Fans of Katie Melua and Corrine Bailey Rae will be at home here.
Her one cover, of Lennon/McCartney’s Help, I rather liked, with its breathy emphases in unexpected places.
Standout track for me was Don’t Want to Fall in Love Again, the only writing partnership on the album with Terry Britten.
I like a peppier number and am a sucker for clever lyrics and syncopation.
Tickets to hear Tammy are available from the Theatre Royal Bath on Sawclose, call 01225 448844.
