Every week I worry about which band I’m going to feature in this column. Every week I worry that there just isn’t going to be a local band worth writing about.
And, luckily, every week I’m pleasantly surprised at the number of top drawer bands there really are in Swindon.
Some people complain that there are no decent bands in the area, but there are – honestly. Sometimes you just have to look for them.
My pleasant surprise this week came in the form of indie-folk quartet Anchor & The Wolf.
They happily admit that they come from a ‘mismatch of musical backgrounds’, but this only makes their tracks more interesting.
Trampolines and Chandeliers combines delicate reverb-soaked guitars with a gentle No Distance Left To Run-esque bass line and a wistful glockenspiel melody; a combination that grabs hold of your heart and squeezes until there's not a single drop of emotion left in it.
On the surface, Postcards is a more lighthearted ukulele-led track, but listen more closely and you’ll discover its melancholy backbone, as vocalist Zoe Mead laments “I never meant to leave you broken-hearted.”
You can catch Anchor & The Wolf live at Riffs Bar in Hook this Sunday.
If their recordings are anything to go by, it should be a bit of a special set, so if I were you, I wouldn’t miss it!
