2:54pm Friday 27th January 2012 in Music By Flicky Harrison
Garry Roberts was the original guitarist and singer with the Boomtown Rats.
Bob Geldof was the band’s manager but was persuaded to take over the singing by Garry who wanted to concentrate on guitar and a super star band was born.
The guys came from Dun Laoghaire in Ireland and got together in 1972. Also in the that first line up was drummer Simon Crowe.
Today Garry and Simon still tour as the Boomtown Rats keeping all the old favourites alive. Tomorrow the MECA in Swindon will be ringing with I Don’t Like Mondays, Rat Trap and other hits along with glam rock kings T-Rex, from 7.30pm.
Tickets are £14 from 01793 495527.
