A WELL-known Worcester tribute singer wants to take on the world with his own bid for Eurovision next year.

Tony James, better known as Blobbie Williams, said he is considering throwing his hat in to the ring to sing for Britain at the song contest.

This year's song contest saw Sweden win with Måns Zelmerlöw's "Heroes", but Tony says he wants to make the UK a real contender next year.

The singer, who takes on the voice, appearance and personality of Robbie Williams in his shows, and in his performances with tribute band, Take Fat, said: "After many years dreaming of true international success, I now feel it is time to take a stand and not only do it on one of the grandest stages of them all but do it for the UK too.

"It is time the United Kingdom came out of the bottom few and rose to the top in full fat style in the Eurovision Song Contest and that is exactly what I'm planning to do.

"A couple of years ago the people of the UK said "we need bigger and we need fun" and that's where I fit the bill.

"After touring hard across the UK I hope he can get the nation behind me.

"We never seem to do very well, so what's the very worst that could happen? I'm willing to put myself out there and do everything I can to make us a success."

Tony confirmed he is working in the studio on his "hit Eurovision song that he hopes will get more than five votes" and that he is soon going to chat to Eurovision producers about representing the country.

The UK's 1920s-influenced swing act Electro Velvet finished 24th out of the 27 participants with just five points.

"I did watch Eurovision this year and got very excited with the final scoring of who was going to win but felt very embarrassed for the UK," he said.

"My favourite — Sweden — won so at least that was something but the UK needs to do better, and if I get the chance, I'll make sure we do."
