"London calling! London calling!” crackling over the airwaves, on the stroke of six, sets the tone for a fantastic evening.

A talented trio of singers and musicians, Glyn Kerslake, Stuart McLoughlin and Lauren Storer, provide a wonderful pot-pourri of songs, spoken words, dance and instrumental numbers that exude the multi-faceted appeal of our capital city.

The show, devised and directed by Gareth Machin, with designer Alex Marker, and music arranged by Kate Edgar, is a total delight. Scenic artists Rod Holt and Sally Holt have produced a charming set that incorporates a silhouetted skyline, the Thames beyond a brick wall, a paved walk with Victorian street lamp, park bench, large Underground sign and traditional red phone box.

Excellent lighting by David Marsh, sound by Mark Noble and slick choreography by Joanne Redman enhance this appealing production.

The show has contrasts galore, from Wordsworth's poem Upon Westminster Bridge to an ebullient rendition of the Flanders & Swann classic Transport of Delight, which extols the merits of a London bus. There is the patriotism of London Pride, the fun of sightseeing, with a musical version of AA Milne's famous verse They're Changing Guard at Buckingham Palace, and the eager anticipation of peacetime in I'm Going to Get Lit Up When the Lights Go Up in London.

Children's rhymes – Oranges and Lemons, London Bridge is Falling Down and Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat, Where Have You Been? – are performed to quieten a crying child. This is done brilliantly, without props, as the singers focus their gaze and their lullaby on a central point, until sobs subside.

There is the jollity of Let's All Go Down the Strand, while pathos pervades The Streets of London and there is poignancy in Underneath the Arches. Romance is here, too, as A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square. Waterloo Sunset, a ’60s hit, and the Piccadilly Line Song, complete with illuminated map around the balcony, are among many treats in a great night out.

The accomplished cast’s vocal ability is matched by their skills on piano, guitar and saxophone. Don’t miss this!
