Wootton Bassett Light Operatic Society offer a sparkling spring tonic in Rodgers & Hammerstein's bright and breezy show Oklahoma! (running until Saturday at the Memorial Hall).

The excellent orchestra is directed by Richard Abrams, veteran performer Sheila Dunn (a founder member, who directed the show in 1988) is fantastic in the central role of Aunt Eller.

Her talent and verve infuse this tuneful tale of farmers, cowboys, love and loss, as the people of the territory prepare for it to become a state.

Tabby Dawson, delightful as Laurey, is partnered by Mike Davies as her handsome beau Curly.

Emily Louise Baker is outstanding as Ado Annie, the girl who "can't say no" to the itinerant pedlar Ali Hakim (splendidly played by Mark Harper) and the earnest Will Parker (Andrew Johnson), who is desperate to make her his bride.

The lovely Hatty Aspell has perfected the truly irritating laugh that the role of Gertie requires.

Her inane hilarity is in stark contrast to the brooding presence of Judd Fry, a role played powerfully by Stuart Dark, Simon Welch gives a good performance as Carnes, called upon to administer justice after some well-contrived fight scenes.

Simple, effective staging and good use of the auditorium enhance the production, which benefits from good costume, props and lighting.

The dream sequence, which encapsulates Laurey's fears, is among many highlights of this enjoyable production, which won a warm response from the first night audience on Wednesday.

A competent chorus and dancers set the seal on success.
