Reporter reporter Lewis Cowen will celebrate his forthcoming retirement from the Wiltshire Times’ sister paper the Gazette and Herald by reprising his successful one-man show about Hollywood legend Samuel Goldwyn.
Cowen won great critical acclaim for his impersonation of the movie mogul when he performed his own script at the Wharf Theatre six years ago and, as he approaches his 65th birthday, he will play it again in the Gallery at Devizes Books on Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31, at 7.30pm.
He said: “I was a professional actor many years ago and played the part of Louis B Mayer in a musical about Judy Garland in the West End.
“But I look more like Sam Goldwyn, so looked into the possibilities of doing a one- man show about him.
“He is a fascinating character. He never got on with his business partners but was greatly loved by everyone else.
“He was one of the few independent producers in Hollywood at the time it was being run by the four big studios. He produced some very popular movies, including the film of West Side Story.”
Goldwyn’s rocky love life and the reason he never had anything to do with Metro Goldwyn Mayer are fully explained in the show.
Tickets, £6, are on sale at Devizes Books on 01380 725944.
