The halls of St Laurence School in Bradford on Avon have been alive with The Sound of Music this week after students put on a production of the much-loved musical.

More than 200 pupils from across the school took part in the show, which included a 40-strong orchestra.

One of the most successful musicals of all time, The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria, a young nun who is sent to be a governess to the seven Von Trapp children.

Captain Von Trapp and his children are captivated by Maria and the joy and music she brings to the family, but their lives are changed forever by the Nazi invasion of Austria in the late 1930s.

Teacher Simon White, who is directing the production, said he hopes the play is a modern adaptation of the story, which many of the students have come to appreciate over the past six months in preparation for showtime.

He said: “We have tried to avoid the traditional way of doing the show but there are some nods to the film – which involve eight buckets of water.

“The challenge was to treat the material with a fresh eye and approach and we have tried very hard to show the audience something they haven’t seen before. We have discussed the political backdrop and the need to make the show as real as possible.”

Performances have been taking place each evening at 7pm since Tuesday and tickets are still available for shows tonight (6) and tomorrow, costing £8 for adults and £5.50 for concessions, from the school.
