THE current play being shown at the Wharf Theatre in Devizes is a hotly anticipated production of seventies classic Abigail’s Party.

Written by Mike Leigh and directed by the Wharf’s own Chris Palmer, Abigail’s Party is 1970s piece that is still very popular today.

The play focuses on five suburban neighbours who have gathered for drinks while a teenager’s party goes on next door.

It has a small cast of just the five neighbours: Beverly played by Lucy Kibby, Laurence played by Kevin Smith, Tony played by Darren Beaton, Angela played by Carolynn Jureidini and Lucianne Worthy as Sue.

The play is set to a soundtrack of Donna Summer, Demis Roussos and Elvis and it is an evening full of laughs, spats, flirting and a very real tragedy.

Having been too young to have watched it at its premiere in 1977 and when filmed for the BBC, I was looking forward to watching the play for the first time.

The whole play is set in Beverly and Laurence’s front room and the period furniture, fold down bar and knick knacks gave it a very authentic seventy’s feel.

I think the cast did a great job, considering most of the play is the group sat around chatting and drinking.

My favourite character was Lucy Kibby’s portrayal of Beverly and the infamous line of Tone? A little cheesy-pineapple one? had me along with the rest of the audience laughing.

Although it is set 30 years ago the awkward social situations and inappropriate moments, such as Beverly dancing with Angela’s husband Tony, are still funny today.

I enjoyed the play and apart from a few forgotten lines it was a fun evening full of laughs.

Abigail’s Party will be on at the Wharf Theatre until May 9 at 7.30pm each evening.

Tickets are £8 and £9, available from the box office in Devizes Books or by calling 01380 725944.
