THERE’S always an anticipation for singers to ruin a Whitney Houston classic but Alexandra Burke hit all the right notes during her performance in The Bodyguard at Bristol Hippodrome.

From the very first bang to the very final note of I Will Always Love You, I have to admit, Burke was truly captivating which proved why she is a three-time Brit nominee and X-Factor winner.

Based on the 1992 Oscar-nominated film which stars Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, The Bodyguard follows the story of former secret service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, who is hired to protect singing superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker.

What they didn’t expect was to fall in love.

The first half paved way for the romantic relationship to blossom while the second half was full of tension as Rachel’s stalker plotted his perfect opportunity – which at times made me jump so much that I thankfully had my dad to cling onto for dear life.

For me, and I think I can speak for the whole Hippodrome, Melissa James who played Nicki Marron was a breath of fresh air in the performance and her voice had the power to make everyone fall silent.

Stuart Reid, who appeared in the West End production of The Bodyguard at the Adelphi Theatre, reprised his role as Frank and his subtlety and softness (while being an Action Man-style hero) added the light and shade that the show needed.

The glitz and glam of the costumes paired with the seamless transition of stage sets brought the show to life which also had a modern feel with the use of projection shots.

Featuring a whole host of classics including Saving All My Love, I Have Nothing, I Wanna Dance with Somebody and I Will Always Love You, the show is one that is guaranteed to get you up on your feet by the end.

The Bodyguard is at The Bristol Hippodrome until January 30 with tickets from £18.50. For more information, visit www.atgtickets.com/venues/bristol-hippodrome
