Review: New Year Seasonal Sauce, The Watermill, Bagnor

11:46am Monday 1st February 2010

By Pat Harper

I approached this reluctantly, having reviewed it in 2003 and loathed it.

It still wouldn’t be a voluntary choice, but I was definitely in a minority of one. Judging by the laughter, the singing and the all round good time being had by the packed audience, everyone else was having a blast.

The show is a cross between Old Time Music Hall and an end-of-the-pier show. The small cast performs a mixture of rather beautifully rendered songs, interspersed with a great deal of unsubtle innuendo and smut.

Miss Judith Hibbert in particular has a wonderful voice, and looks spectacular in her range of gorgeous costumes. Mr. Richard Gauntlett is terrific as MC, wittily introducing the acts and performing some entertaining spots of his own.

There are few places you can go for a good old community sing song nowadays, and Seasonal Sauce fills that gap admirably.

You get your songsheet as you go in, and the singers among you will be pleased to know that the show starts with My Old Man and moves through most of the old favourites.

If this is your sort of thing, you will really enjoy the evening. Just don’t sit at the front unless you want to be picked on by the crude Miss Helen Watson, or up on stage wrapping the MC in a 20ft chain and straitjacket.

When Jill from Basingstoke was planning her evening, I bet she hadn’t reckoned on trying to catch a swinging crotch strap. You have been warned.

It runs until February 6.
