STAFF at Thames Water will be ditching their normal day jobs as they take to the stage for charity.
Next week the company’s Swindon-based customer services team will stage their 17th annual charity panto, taking on the classic, Beauty and the Beast.
Their previous 16 productions have raised £162,000 for a variety of local and national charities over the years.
This year WaterAid, Cancer Research UK and Blue Cross will all benefit from the show, which is being performed at the Wyvern Theatre.
The production features 35 Thames Water employees, who work both on stage and behind the scenes.
Paul Aust, customer consultant, is producing the show with his wife Lisa, customer advisor, as co-director.
“Last year my wife directed the show so, of course there’s a bit of matrimonial competition, but I’m confident this year’s production will be as successful as last year’s,” he said.
“The main thing though is the charities.
“When this was first set up in 1996 they wanted something that would raise money for charity but also help build team spirit and get everyone across the building involved.
“In 1998 I took over and have been doing it ever since. It is a really good laugh and I think it is that fun we have on stage that really comes across. That is what the audience enjoy.
“We do it for two nights and usually have about 500 people each night which is great.
“It is not a traditional panto which are usually aimed at children, it is family friendly but I would say it is a PG rating rather than a U.
“We would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the years.
“Not only is this great fun for all those who join us, but this money makes a real difference to the vital charities that we support.”
Martin Baggs, Thames Water’s CEO, said: “I’m looking forward to seeing Beauty and the Beast and if it is anything like last year, it will be an experience not to forget. If anyone gets the chance they should join us, have some fun and raise some money at the same time.”
The show is on for two nights, Friday, January 27, and Saturday, January 28, and starts at 7.30pm.
Tickets can be bought from the Wyvern Theatre website at www.wyverntheatre.org.uk or from the box office.
