STUDENTS from Swindon College showed off their brush skills when they rubbed shoulders with industry experts.

Sixty seven media make-up students visited the International Make-up Artist Trade Show (IMATS) at Alexandra Palace in London last week.

While they were there, three students worked as make-up artists for supplier Tresure House on its promotional stand.

One of the students chosen, Becky Marks, 22, who is on the HND production arts media make-up course, was inspired by Great Expectations character Miss Haversham for her creation.

She said: “I made a costume too. She never ate the wedding cake and that was the inspiration for the wig.

“It was brilliant being chosen to work on the stand. They were impressed by my work.

“Lots of people were walking past and making comments. It makes you feel like your work is appreciated. I want to be really successful and get my name out there.”

Becky’s work is now on various websites and she hopes it will help her future career.

Megan Stevens and Sarah Rawlings, who are studying the BTEC National Diploma at the college, were also chosen to work on the stand.

Becky said: “It gave us a real taste of what it’s like to be a professional make-up artist.”

Ellie Baskerville, a media make-up lecturer at Swindon College, said: “The girls did an absolutely fantastic job – the crowds were really impressed, including professional make-up artists from all over Europe. The students were able to put into practice everything they have been learning at college.”

Some of the make-up industry’s most dazzling artists were booked for the show. Keynote speakers included BAFTA winner Nick Dudman, the make-up mastermind behind the Harry Potter film series, as well as the Emmy Award-winning Valenté Frazier.
