Personal Overview - Has the distinction of being a Conservative MP with a Coal Mining background. It is notable that he was a strike breaker in the 1983 Miner's strike, when his spoke out against the then strike leader Arthur Scargill. However, this did not stop him having a junior Ministerial career, and then becoming a Whip after a brief break. He continued after 1997, becoming the Conservative Deputy Chief Whip in 1998. Was promoted to become the Opposition Chief Whip in 2005, the first David Cameron appointment after his predecessor David MacLean decided to stand down from the post. He became Government Chief Whip following the 2010 election before being removed from that role in 2012 becoming Transport Secretary.
