MP Since - 1997 Majority - 13,666 Born - 20/02/1960.
Education - Holy Cross Convent School, Essex University.
Previous Occupation - Has worked as a Development Coordinator at Battersea Church Housing Trust (1988-97).
Personal Overview - Her career experience indicates a likely interest in Housing issues. She has been involved in Local Government, and after the 1997 election gained experience with a Select Committee membership. Critical of Ken Livingstone's personalisation of London politics (which has proved detrimental to Labour interests) she has strong central connections with the Party Leadership - her sister (Margaret) has been the Party's General Secretary, and she has a sizeable credit following her opposition to Arthur Scargill's attempts to scupper Clause Four redrafting. Proved a rather quiet backbencher since 1997, which has not so far brought her a frontbench posting. Though a capture from the Tories in 1997 the constituency now votes more than 2:1 in Labour's favour, which should prove sufficient even in the face of a general Conservative revival. In Parliament has lobbied to change the law to allow former Catholic Priests to stand as MPs and for the introduction of digital hearing aids on the NHS to all that require them. Has campaigned for the reopening of the Wilson hospital (within her constituency). Was sacked as an Assistant Government Whip in September 2008 after calling for a party leadership contest. Once again in June 2009 she called for Gordon Brown to step down as Prime Minister following the resignation of the Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell.

Political History - Councillor, Merton BC (1982-97). Parliamentary Candidate, Mitcham & Morden (1987, 1992). MP Mitcham & Morden (1997-). Member of the Social Security Select Committee (1997-98). Member of the Health Select Committee (2000-05). Member of the London Committee (2009-10). Member of the Education Select Committee (2012-). PPS to Rt. Hon John Reid (Defence) (2005-06), (Home Office) (2006-07). Assistant Government Whip (2007-08).
Characteristics - Is Catholic. Was the youngest speaking delegate at the 1983 Labour Party Conference. Hosted a Parliamentary reception for Radio 1.
