In addition, he is likely to have developed political knowledge from his work for the Labour Party on various campaigns. He successfully advanced into a Ministerial role within Government in his first parliament, where his media skills were to be tested. Somewhat dubiously appointed to the unofficial posting of 'Patriotism' envoy whilst at Education, the appointment illustrated he was viewed as a competent pair of hands. Although possessing a rather mannered public delivery he gained further ministerial office after the 2001 General Election becoming a junior to Lord Irvine at the Lord Chancellor's Department, later joining the Home Office, before being moved out in the 2005 post election reshuffle. Rejoined Government in 2007 under Gordon Brown's administration.
