EQUESTRIAN: JAY Halim took two of the eight tickets on offer in a national show jumping qualifier at West Wilts Equestrian Centre, Holt.

The Lechlade-based event rider and show jumper was competing in the Blue Chip Power qualifier at the BSJA show, which leads to a national final in the Midlands in April 2006. He topped the class on the promising five-year-old mare Maybe Baby II, heading a jump-off field of 25 horses.

"There were well over 60 in the first round and I had three horses into the jump-off," Jay said.

"Maybe Baby was drawn in the middle and went really well to win. I was drawn towards the end on Roscoes Royal and decided to go for a steady clear to make sure of qualifying, which he did in fourth."

Maybe Baby, who is by the renowned event stallion Mayhill, came into Jay's yard in March.

"She came in for me to break I liked her straight away and bought a half share in her, which I couldn't really afford. The other owner is Uffington's June Parrot and the mare will hopefully be my event horse of the future. She has a lot of jump but has been quite difficult on the flat."

Jay rides Roscoes Royal for owner Marcus Reeder, from Top Tack, and also won the 1.20m and Foxhunter combined class at West Wilts on another of his horses.

"This was the mare Landora, who has been ridden by Tim Stockdale in the past," Jay added. "It was the first show I'd ever done with the horse, who isn't stabled with me. We went in early and lead from the start."

Minety-based 23-year-old Jonathan Bowman took the second ticket in the Blue Chip Power qualifier, riding the 15.2hh dark bay mare Akosie Du Wonderland for owner Alison Lewis.

Jonathan is also currently chasing a place in the Winter Novice Championship at the 2006 Royal International Horse Show and will contest more Blue Chip qualifiers in the New Year.
