MARLBOROUGH Town Council is to tell St George's Church in Preshute to look elsewhere for the £400 it needs to put up signs so that visitors can find the tiny parish church.
The parochial church council needs a total of £812 to pay for five signs showing the way to the church, at the end of a lane off Manton High Street, from the A4.
Churchwarden David Beacom wrote to the town council saying they had received a private donation of £400, so just needed a similar amount to be able to get the project started.
Mr Beacom wrote: "Church funds are always in short supply. We have just completed our organ refurbishment and will be starting the quinquennial works to the external fabric of the church in the spring."
But Coun Graham Francis said they would be making a precedent.
Coun Stuart Dobson said: "I thought Marlborough Area Development Trust had money it didn't know what to do with. This is something it could become involved in."
