ANGRY residents in Moredon are demanding to know when a mobile phone mast will be moved. Back in July, it was agreed that a mast in Akers Way would be relocated.

Mobile phone network O2 said it would move the mast to the other side of the street 40m further away from houses in Manor Crescent, which face on to it.

But six months on and neither ward councillors nor residents have heard from O2.

Coun Derique Montaut (Lab, Moredon) has organised a public meeting for today to discuss the problem and decide on a plan of action. North Swindon MP Michael Wills is also due to attend.

"We feel that the agreement made in July was a bit of a con and we're not happy," said Coun Montaut.

"I am extremely disappointed. It concerns me that O2 have not honoured their promise.

"If they had no intention of moving the mast then they should have made that very clear.

"I can thoroughly understand why local residents may also feel disappointed O2 are playing games with us."

Last year mum-of-two Karen Kelly, 48, of Manor Crescent, rallied her neighbours to fight the mast, gathering a 300 strong petition. She echoed Coun Montaut's comments.

"The Government is spending millions of pounds in researching the possible health effects of these masts so there is obviously a risk," said Mrs Kelly. Her 13-year-old son, Morgan, suffers from alopecia areata a condition that causes hair loss and weakens immune systems. I have read about these masts on the internet and there is a possibility that the radiation can cause cancer," she said.

"My son's immune system is very weak and I am not happy about there being one of these masts outside his bedroom window. I am absolutely disgusted that we have had no consultation from O2 they should be speaking to residents. To be honest, I'm close to giving up. We're up against a multi-million pound company."

O2 did not return calls from the Advertiser.

The meeting, which is open to all interested parties, starts at 4pm at Moredon Community Centre.
