Fuel prices to break through 130p

THE price of diesel is about to break through the 130p a litre barrier in the Salisbury area.

The highest price to emerge from a Journal survey today was 129.9p at the Riverside Service Station, Stapleford.

Unleaded petrol there was 116.9 - again, the dearest we found.

At the Brickworth Corner Service Station, Whiteparish, diesel was 127.9p and unleaded, 113.9p.

At Rangers in Durrington, diesel was also 127.9p, with unleaded at 112.9, while at the BP Service Station on Wilton Road, Salisbury, diesel was 126.9p and unleaded, 113.9. A spokesman there said: "These are very difficult times. Prices are changing almost daily."

The Bridge Garage in Shrewton, Tilshead Garage and the Stonehenge Filling Station at Winterbourne Stoke were also charging 126.9p and 113.9p, although a spokesman at Shrewton said their prices were due to be cut by the weekend.

At the Tinker-Bell Service Station in Barford St Martin, diesel was 125.9p and unleaded, 112p. A member of staff said customers seemed to be accepting the current high prices without complaint. "We have been quite busy still," she said.

Cheapest in the area were the Shell garage on Downton Road, Salisbury, and Waitrose, both charging at 120.9 and 109.9.

Tesco was marginally dearer, at 120.9p and 110.9p.

Garage owners warned that prices were likely to rise still further in the next few days and there was a general acceptance that diesel could hit 150p by August or September.

At the Four Acres Filling Station on London Road, Salisbury, which was charging 123.9 for diesel and 112.9 for unleaded, a spokesman pointed out that for every 12p the price goes up, the Chancellor gets an extra 2p in VAT.
