Olympic hopefuls to receive £5,000 in grants
North Wiltshire District Council is pledging to assist the sporting stars of the future by awarding a £1,000 grant to five Olympic hopefuls.
£5,000 of grant funding has been made available to provide five successful applicants with £1,000 each towards achieving possible Olympic success in 2012.
The awards will help discover any potential sporting stars of the future in North Wiltshire and provide them with assistance towards achieving the ultimate in sporting achievements.
The funding can be used to help individuals access training and competitive opportunities, purchase equipment and cover transport costs for attending regional and national events.
Applications are open to any individual aged 19 and under who is competing at county level in an Olympic Sport as a minimal standard. Funding is available to support talented athletes to enable continued development in their respective sports with a view to challenging for honours at the London Olympics in 2012.
All applications should be received by December 19th 2008 and a decision will be made in early January as to the successful applicants.
Lead Member for Leisure at North Wiltshire District Council, Cllr Viv Vines, says, "This award should make a huge difference to the successful individual in terms of providing financial support. It will enable them to attend National events, training camps and make a significant contribution towards the costs associated with being involved in elite level competition."
