The drink-driver who put a stop to a Bradford on Avon man’s charity dancing challenge has been banned from driving for 28 months.
Former St Laurence Student Ben Hammond was attempting to dance from John O’Groats to Land’s End when he was hit by Alanna Rugg on the A39 in Polsham, Somerset.
The 25-year-old appeared before South Somerset Magistrates’ Court, where she pleaded guilty to drink driving and failing to stop at the scene.
Mr Hammond was dancing from his Bradford on Avon to Glastonbury with his support tricycle late on October 3 when they were both hit by Rugg. He was hoping to raise £50,000 for disadvantaged people in Burma.
The teacher was forced to postpone his long distance dance following the concussion and stitches caused by the incident, but has vowed to complete the challenge next month.
Rugg, from Wookey, was found with 112mcgs of alcohol for 100ml of breath, over three times the legal limit. She will now complete 120 hours of unpaid community service, and the ban could be reduced by 213 days if she undertakes a drink-driving rehab course.
