A pub was forced to close its doors for a week, after its bar was flooded during the bad weather that has hit the county.

The Longs Arms in Lower South Wraxall was affected on Sunday morning, when a drain outside the pub burst.

The cost of the damage, believed to have been caused when the drain became clogged with fallen autumn leaves, is already running into thousands of pounds.

Landlady Liz Allcock said: “It’s in the thousands, rather than the hundreds. We have all the repair work and we’re still paying our bills and we have to keep paying the staff.

“I don’t know exactly how much it will cost us, but it’s a substantial amount.

“The main thing is, we are up and running and ready to reopen.”

A Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service crew from Trowbridge was sent to pump out water at 10.45m.

Another crew, based in nearby Bradford on Avon was unable to attend, as it was already dealing with a flooded property elsewhere in the village.

Mrs Allcock, who has been the landlady for 18 months, said: “There was quite a lot of water in the pub itself and the carpets are ruined.

“The water was coming in off the field outside. It didn’t help that the some of the gullies that collect the field water were blocked, clogging up the drains.

“The water from the gully was just gathering up outside one of the front doors.

“It all happened within ten minutes.”

Mrs Allcock paid tribute to the support she has received from her neighbours.

She said: “The villagers have been great. We had ten of us scooping out the water before the fire crew got here.”

The pub has been closed since the flood, while the carpets in the front bar are replaced, but it is expected to reopen fully at the weekend.

Mrs Allcock said: “We’re very food-orientated and we expect to reopen for Sunday lunch, with new carpets.

“We also normally have very busy Friday evenings, so we may be able to open for drinkers then.

“It’s been a very busy couple of days, but it could have been a whole lot worse. One of the homes in the village has been badly flooded and that’s someone’s home.”

Despite the worst of the flooding hitting the north of the county, fire crews in the west of Wiltshire were still kept busy dealing with floodwater.

A crew from Corsham was called to a house in Middlehill, Box, at 9.30am on Sunday, to clear a flooded basement.
