Jane Asher will be heading to Corsham today, as she visits a project helping local families turn their lives around.
The actress, author and entrepreneur and Barnardo's supporter, will be touring the Corsham Sure Start Children’s Centre. The Kings Avenue project is managed on behalf of Wiltshire Council and provides free support to local parents and carers, including parenting programmes, cookery courses and links to training and employment.
In her first visit to a Barnardo’s centre, she will meet staff and local families before cutting a specially-decorated cake to celebrate the registration of more than 1,000 parents and carers since it first opened in 2008.
Activities in the centre include antenatal and health visitor clinics, parenting programmes, support with speech and language, soft play sessions, young parents groups and a Dads and Kids Club.
Barnardo’s team leader Sarah Nelson said: “We are delighted that Jane is able to visit our project and learn more about how we are helping so many families to turn their lives around.
“Our staff and volunteers have a great relationship with the local community, establishing a level of trust and understanding which encourages parents and carers to seek help if needed.
“So, although we’re mainly targeting some of the more vulnerable and disadvantaged residents, nobody feels stigmatised when they walk through our doors.
“We are immensely proud of everything that has been achieved, not only by our own team but also by the parents themselves.”
