A quiet residential street in Melksham is back on the map, after its well-loved Christmas lights were switched on again.

Electrician Alex Goodhind used to decorate his parents’ home in Longford Road with illuminations to raise money for Dorothy House.

He attracted media attention from around the world for his efforts but has not decorated the building for the past two years.

Now the festive lights are back, bigger and brighter than ever before.

Mr Goodhind spent weeks decorating the house and preparing 180,000 lights with his friends, Craig Armstrong and Kim Bailey, who have also been dressing up to collect money from visitors.

Mr Bailey said: “It’s been absolutely fantastic. The snow machine has been a big hit, the kids just love it. And it definitely helps to have Santa and his elf outside.”

As well as coloured lights and decorations, the friends have installed a searchlight, previously used at Club Ice.

Mr Bailey said: “The search light can be seen over 6km away, so we’re hoping people will follow the light to the Christmas wonderland.”

When all the lights are on, the property draws 225 amps, which has led Mr Goodhind to install an industrial generator to provide the power.

In the four previous years the lights were up, they raised more than £8,000 for the hospice, which cared for Mr Goodhind’s mother.

Emily Knight, a community fundraiser at Dorothy House, said: “It’s taken them a massive amount of work.”
