A FAMILY of five saw their Christmas presents go up in flames after their car caught fire on the motorway.

The family, including three young children, looked on in horror as emergency services arrived to put out the blaze, which happened at around 4.30pm on Christmas Eve between junction 17 and 16 of the M4 eastbound.

Police said the family, who were travelling from Somerton, Somerset to Swindon, managed to escape injury and were safely away from the car when officers arrived.

Other drivers stopped to offer the family, including 10-year-old Neave, four-year-old Summer and Shae, three, hats and coats.

Police Sergeant Warren Knight said: "The family were safely away from the car but all the contents, including their Christmas presents, we're lost in the fire.

"The family and the police are grateful to people who stopped to give assistance with hats and coats for the victims while they were waiting for the emergency services."
