Charity wrestling night showcases local talent

This Is Wiltshire: JD Knight will appear at Marlborough Town Hall JD Knight will appear at Marlborough Town Hall

Marlborough is getting ready to rumble as the stars of Grandslam Wrestling take over the town hall to raise money for the charity Beat Bullying.

On Friday, January 25, the town hall will be transformed into a wrestling arena with competitors from all over the world.

They will include 29-year-old Swindon wrestler James Dunn, aka JD Knight, who worked in a supermarket in the High Street, Marlborough, for six years.

He said: “I used to be the manager of Somerfield, so I’m expecting to see a lot of people I know and it will be great to see some old faces.

“In 2010 I was wrestling at Wyvern Theatre in Swindon and four or five people from Marlborough came.

“They didn’t realise I was wrestling but they recognised me and afterwards came backstage, so I reckon if people will travel all that way to watch they’ll definitely come if it’s just down the road.

“I run my own wrestling academy and a few years ago we looked at using the town hall as a venue.

“For one reason or another it didn’t come off, but it’s a great venue so it should be a good night.

“A lot of people in Marlborough really enjoy wrestling and they can expect to see a lot of action and some great athleticism.

“Kids will love it, it’s a really family orientated night – it’s like the pantomime but with wrestlers.”

Six foot tall JD Knight will be taking on 25-stone Welsh wrestling champion Bison Brody, who towers six inches above him, but he is confident the crowd can spur him on to victory.

He said: “I weigh about 16 stone so I think of myself as quite big, but when you think about going against someone that big it’s a whole different game.

“But I think, with the support of the home crowd, I can beat him.”

Other top stars due to appear include Japanese mystery man Tagore, high-flying Mexican sensation Magico, and Yestin Reyes, making his last UK appearance before he jets off to America to start his WWE contract.

Tickets are available by calling 0844 870 0000 or on the door.
