Free detectors to keep elderly safe this winter

AGE Concern Swindon has issued a warning to elderly residents of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.

And, in an effort to make pensioner's homes safe during the winter months, the charity is providing free carbon monoxide detectors for people who visit their office at 1 Milton Road and receive a quotation for switching to Age Concern Energy Services (ACES).

With more than 100 people needlessly dying in the past two years because of carbon monoxide poisoning, Age Concern Swindon, is urging homeowners in the town to follow some simple rules to help reduce unnecessary fatalities and stay safe.

Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous gas that is difficult to detect as it has no taste, colour or smell.

"The likelihood of deaths in the home as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning can be greatly reduced by regularly servicing all household gas appliances," said Jo Osorio, of Age Concern Swindon.

"However, this can be costly. This, and the fact they may have an old installation, is why older people are among the groups most susceptible to carbon monoxide poisoning.

"But by buying an affordable gas and electricity package, such as the one offered by Age Concern Energy Services, and by taking advantage of the free carbon monoxide detectors and alarms available to new customers joining through Age Concern Swindon, this will alert users to the potential risks from carbon monoxide poisoning."
