LAND and buildings connected to Swindon’s railway heritage are among the sites put up for sale on a new Government website.

The online guide, entitled Find Me Some Government Space, has been launched by the Cabinet Office to enable the public to see what property is on the market in a given area.

Searches work in a similar way to commercial websites like Rightmove by letting visitors enter a postcode or an area keyword to find properties and land in their area.

Properties in Swindon include land attached to the Newburn Centre, in Newburn Crescent, which is owned by the British Railways Board, and Rowan House in Sandalwood Court, Stratton, which has been used by the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust.

Former sidings on the Wootton Bassett Road, also owned by the British Railways Board, which falls under the Department for Transport, is among the other sites up for sale.

Ash House in Brimble Hill, Burderop, which has been used by Swindon PCT, is also listed along with nearby land and buildings.

Surplus land falling under the Highways Agency in Carlow Old Lady Lane, Blunsdon, makes up the list.

The site also offers first-floor space in the Bora Building in Westlea for rent.

Chloe Smith, the Minister for Political and Constitutional Reform, said: “We’re making the civil service more efficient and cutting waste, as a result we will have a number of properties both owned and rented that we need to do more with.

“Not only will this website help to save Government money but we will see new opportunities, jobs and growth in local economies as new life is brought into empty, unused properties.”

The website is part of a drive to reduce costs overseen by the Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude. Since May 2010 more than £640 million has been raised by selling more than 250 buildings.

Across the country properties include an Army careers office in Barnstaple, Honiton Magistrates’ Court and a fire station in Dorchester.
