This Is Wiltshire: Stephanie Millward shows off her medals to Wansdyke pupils Stephanie Millward shows off her medals to Wansdyke pupils

Hundreds of Devizes school children and their teachers could hardly contain their excitement when Paralympic swimmer Stephanie Millward arrived to show off her medals.

Miss Millward, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, won four silver medals and a bronze in the London games last year.

She has now become an ambassador for Devizes charity Bag4Sport.

Her first stop last Friday, which was part of a drive to promote the charity, was Bishops Cannings School.

Miss Millward took part in an assembly and then visited every class so children could try on her medals and hold the torch she carried in the Olympic relay.

Next she met pupils from Year 7 and Year 8 at Rowdeford School before going on to Wansdyke Primary School and Southbroom Infants’ School.

Wansdyke teacher Hannah Knight said: “We were all thrilled by Stephanie’s visit.

“Everyone was very excited to see and touch the medals and we really want to become involved with Bag4Sport by doing recycling.”

Bag4Sport raises money for schools and sports groups by encouraging them to collect unwanted textiles. Clothes are sent to people in poor countries or recycled.

Wansdyke has also signed up for the charity’s mascot competition and will has a chance of winning the £500 first prize. Children are asked to design a suit that can be worn by a mascot at events and form part of a logo.

The contest is open to those aged from five to 16.

Miss Millward said: “It was really lovely to see so many children being genuinely excited by sport. It was a fantastic experience.”
