Police issue appeal after fatal A36 crash

Police are appealing for witnesses after a fatal road crash on the A36 near Warminster last night.

A 50-year-old man from the Rode area was killed in a collision with another car just after 5pm and the road was closed for seven hours.

The Wiltshire Air Ambulance attended but the man suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident happened at Norridge Woods on the A36 between the Cley Hill and Granada Services roundabouts.

A white VW Golf driven by a 22-year-old from Melksham, who was driving towards the Granada Services, collided with the man's green coloured Rover 400.

The road, closed while emergency services carried out investigations into the crash. was re-opened this morning.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact PC David Williams from the serious collision investigation team on the police non-emergency number 101.

VW Golf? 22 year old male? Statistics seem to be loaded against the combination.

Someones recklessness and stupidity killing an innocent family man !!

Betty77 says...
5:28pm Tue 5 Feb 13

Both of the above comments reek of jumping to conclusions without any facts, not all 22yr old VW drivers are 'reckless' & 'stupid'. With it happening at 5pm lets assume it was an all too common rush hour traffic collision until proven otherwise.

Here we go again with you all making assumptions. It could have been a vehicle failure on either car or maybe the elder gentleman was taken ill. Maybe the Rover swerved to avoid another irresponsible driver or an animal. Or heaven forbid the Rover driving was driving with undue car and attention or speeding. If you don't know all the facts, it's better not to make any comment at all. If you do know the facts speak to the police!

Well said Betty77 and rusty bucket. How inconsiderate of these people to make assumptions and accusation that it was the 22year olds fault. The police definitely haven't said or implied this. How awful to be involved in such an awful incident and how awful for both families. Show some respect for all involved. Not every young driver is a bad reckless driver, there are bad drivers of all ages and no one knows the circumstances yet.

Sorry to offend but maybe come back to this page when you know the facts !!

As a young driver myself, I find it completely unbelievable and incredibly ageist to suggest that the 22-year old driver was at fault! I'm not saying either he is or he isn't, all I can make from the article is that there has been an awful incident here. Neither of the people involved, or their families for that matter, need to see the blame being thrown around on "statistics" I've seen the older "more experienced" drivers causing much more of a risk on our roads. So pull your head out of your a*se and show some respect and pray for those who have lost!!!

How about we leave it up to the trained professionals to work out how this terrible accident came about, rather than blaming people when we have no facts. What ever has happened there is a dead person and devastated family and friends. RIP.

old 'arry says...
6:18am Wed 6 Feb 13

I did NOT suggest anyone was to blame. I said STATISTICS prove that proportionally young males are involved in more fatal accidents than other groups. FACT. That's why their insurance is much higher. Why do people leap to conclusions and say that is blaming someone? Read what's there, not what you think is or should be there.

Oh dear, so all the do-gooders who sprang to his defence have egg on their faces! How will it ruin his life? A ban for a couple of years and he'll be back playing boy racers again.

With the benefit of statistics one can see that it is far safer to drive through Warminster town.
The bypass seems to be infested with impatient cretins of all ages in an imaginary hurry, who think that the passing of other cars is more important than the safety of other road users.

So I'm a do-gooder with egg on my face am I? Sorry, old 'arry, I'm a normal sane person who abhors people who spread gossip and make assumptions without knowing the full facts - just like you did on Tuesday and as you've also done plenty of times before. WHen will Wiltshire County Council wake up and realise that the A36 Bypass should have never have been a partial three lane road? Why did they not build it as a dual carriageway. I have never used that road as it is badly thought out and encouarges idiots to take risks and cause collisions (not accidents).

JoDope says...

This was nothing to do with the road layout, since the bypass was opened all (I think) but one of the fatal collisions have been on the two lane sections and most were caused by ill advised overtaking

I am not going to comment about this particular case until all of the facts come out. But an analogy can be drawn with this section of the A36 (a road which is considered hazardous in many other places too) with the A303 Ilminster bypass which was also built originally as a 2-lane road but wide enough for later extension (as funds became available) to a dual carriageway. Several fatal RTCs took place there until the road markings were changed to clearly delineate the lanes and overtaking places. But a road can never be described as dangerous - how can it be when it is just an inanimate object? The RTCs are caused by drivers: some rise to the challenge presented by a hazardous road whilst others fail miserably.

Who is giving this ill advice?

There should be no overtaking at all. Even on the parts where an overtaking lane is provided, there are dimwits who think 'overtake or bust' and barely manage to get past before the lane runs out thereby narrowly avoiding their own or someone else's termination.

Nonsense. Dangerous describes anything able or likely to cause injury, inanimate eg ice, weapons, drugs or not eg tigers,

It's not nonsense at all. You fail to understand the difference between hazardous and dangerous. If there were no vehicles on that section of road at all then what danger would it present? It would, however, still be a hazard, just waiting for the minority of drivers who actually create the danger.

This arguement about "dangerous" versus "hazardous" is very Shakespearean: to quote the Bard, "It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing".

beetawix says...
4:48pm Sat 9 Feb 13

'arry, no-one is arguing about that - only one correspondent mentioned that two word comparison. The same one who introduced the topic 'dangerous' at 10:34am Fri 8 Feb 13.

I know little Shakespeare and therefore am not aware of the context for the given quote so I hope he was not attributing his comments to all idiot taletellers. If he was then the bard is incorrect, tales told by idiots are just as likely to be quietly and peacefully presented.

The hazardous v dangerous debate is more a matter of semantics and hardly something that evokes Macbeth's reaction to news of the death of his wife. If anything can be brought to mind by it then I would suggest Monty Python's argument sketch.

What is the matter with people, a person has died his family devastated. Please let the experts do their job in sorting out how and why this happened, the truth always comes out. Luna, even if your husband helped here with his job it is not right for either of you to be saying what happened on this site for other people to hear, Cauldicott principles in these cases are important to us people who work in this sector and our patients. It is one thing for your husband to tell you about what he has had to deal with but for you to be saying who did what here is inappropiate. When the investigation is done the police will release what they want us to know. The only people who have a right to the ins and out of what happened here are the direct family and not us public. As you can gather from some of the comments, the reason why this information should not be placed on here for people to make hurtful comments when all that matters here at the moment is the poor loved ones left behind.

Not everyone feels they have to react to events such as this with the RIPs and thoughts and prayers etc. platitudes.
