Funding is being sought for a new heating system at St Michael’s Church in Aldbourne to encourage people to attend winter services.
Members of the church are trying to raise around £75,000 so it can continue to be at the heart of the community.
Parishioners have already raised £15,000 through concerts, fetes and church tower tours, and have fitted a new boiler. The next phase of the project is to install a radiator system beneath the church pews.
Mike Hellier from Friends of St Michael’s said: “We are trying to raise money for a new heating system so folk will feel more inclined to come to church when it’s cold in the winter. The church is very beautiful but it gets very cold because it is so old.
“We fundraise through the year so we can maintain the fabric of the church and the heating is something that we have wanted to address for some years.
“We’ve already managed to replace the boiler and you can notice a difference, but the choir still have to keep their coats and scarves on when they rehearse.
“Friends of St Michael’s Church exists for all Aldbourne residents who have an interest in the church, not just parishioners, because the church is used for a number of community events.
“We like to encourage as many people as possible to become members because their £10 subscription fee can go towards our fundraising.”
A comedy night is being held in the church featuring comedy musical cabaret trio Instant Sunshine.
The event is at 6.30pm on March 2. Tickets will be available from The Aldbourne Post Office or from Julie McGowen on (01672) 541362.
