Police have logged several reports of handbags and purses being stolen from cars left locked and parked in rural areas around Westbury and Warminster.
A car at Shearwater Lake had a window smashed before a handbag taken from inside on Sunday afternoon, while a vehicle parked on the outskirts of Codford on January 29 was also broken in to and a bag stolen.
A handbag was stolen from a car outside Christ Church in Weymouth Street, Warminster, on January 29.
Inspector Lindsey Winter said: “It is strongly suspected that the persons who commit these sorts of crimes travel considerable distances in a day, driving across Wiltshire visiting car parks and rural locations specifically targeting those of us who enjoy walking.
“It is believed the offenders may even spend time watching people leave their cars, hiding handbags in the boot or under seats. People should not be leaving bags and purses in cars.”
