WHILE most babies won’t get their first pearly whites until they are six-months-old, Keris Godwin got hers just days after she was born.

Her mum, Kerrie Aldridge, of Park North, noticed a lump in the newborn’s mouth after she arrived by caesarean section at Great Western Hospital on February 12.

Two days later, the 31-year-old noticed Keris’ first tooth had come through.

“It was weird because I saw a big lump in her mouth after she was born and I thought it looked like a tooth,” said the mother-of-three.

“Then two days later I could just see there was something little and sharp in her mouth. “I said to the midwife ‘I think she has got a tooth’ and she gave me a funny look. She looked at her and then said ‘oh my god, she has’.

“The midwife said they had heard of it happening but had never had it at the hospital before.

“It has just kept growing. Now it’s massive. It’s nearly a full-size baby tooth. It’s on the bottom but she has got another two coming through at the top.

“Nobody else in my family got their teeth early. I don’t know why she’s come with them.”

Keris, who weighed 5lbs 15oz when she was born, stayed in hospital with Kerrie after the birth, which was 10 days earlier than expected.

“I was booked in for a caesarean but I went into labour myself on the Tuesday. She was breech so I wasn’t allowed to have a normal birth,” said Kerrie.

“When she got her tooth I even had midwives coming to my room asking if they could have a look before we went home.”

Keris’ dad Chris, 26, said: “I was shocked when I found out she had a tooth. I had popped downstairs in the hospital to get a drink and then I saw Kerrie with all the midwives holding Keris.

“I said ‘what’s going on?’ and she said she had found a tooth. All the midwives were amazed.”

Kerrie said they are delighted to welcome Keris into the family.

“I have got two boys already, Keris is my first little girl. It’s amazing to have her. I still keep looking at her like I’m dreaming,” she said.

“I think she looks like my youngest boy, she’s the double of him. Everyone else says she looks like me.”

In most babies, baby teeth start to emerge through the gums when they are around six-months-old, but they can be born with teeth.

Bottom front teeth are usually the first to come through, at around five to seven months and top front teeth usually come through at around six to eight months.
