Devizes Town Council has backed a bid to safeguard a building at Lower Wharf.

The Trust for Devizes has applied to Wiltshire Council to make its depot used by parking enforcement staff as an asset of community value.

This would afford the building some protection by ensuring the owner cannot dispose of it without informing the local council and providing an opportunity for a community bid to buy it.

The asset of community value is a provision in the Localism Act 2011.

Ted East, chairman of The Trust for Devizes and a town councillor, said: “Wiltshire Council would be obliged to notify the town council if the property is for disposal.”

The town council planning committee agreed to support the move to make the depot an asset of community value.
