Local take on Cinderella is a big hit in Calne

Calne Players’ version of Cinderella attracted a full house to Marden House for most performances.

Audience members enjoyed all the usual characters such as the ugly sisters and fairy godmother as well as several extras, including a window cleaner keeping a watchful eye over Cinderella.

The script was written by directors Alison Barrett and Carolynn Cowdry, who had a surprise up their sleeve for the cast members. Although they have been writing for the group for several years, they submitted the script under pseudonyms for the committee to consider.

Mrs Cowdry said: “Alison and I didn’t tell anyone we had written either last year’s pantomime, Snow White, or this one, as we wanted the scripts to be chosen on their own merit. We decided to tell the cast after the last performance this year and it was a total surprise to them all.”

The group fundraises to cover costs and the first prize in the raffle was a stay for two in London with theatre tickets. Calne Taxis donated a chauffeur-driven car for the return trip.

The Players currently need storage space for costumes and props. Call Chris Rudge on (01249) 814886.
