Disruption to Westbury trains after level crossing death

Trains between Westbury and Taunton have been disrupted after a crash at a level crossing in Somerset.

One person died when a train hit a level crossing near Athelney, on the line between Taunton and Castle Cary at about 6.30 this morning.

The affected service was the 05:46 GMT from Exeter St Davids to Paddington, London.
The train was not derailed and none of the 37 passengers were injured.

Network Rail confirmed the "barriers were down, the car was on the track, the crossing was working correctly".

Services are being diverted with extended journey times expected and road replacement transport is in operation to assist with journeys in the area.

Lines are expected to reopen later this afternoon.
