Pupils at Kingdown School in Warminster have been enjoying The Big Read, a week of activities to inspire children to read for pleasure.

Events included the Library Cup Project, a competition giving Year 7 and 8 pupils a chance to choose from a menu of tasks to demonstrate understanding of a book.

Teachers said they were amazed by the creative responses, which included models of characters and settings, decorated cakes, cartoon strips and newspaper articles.

Each class voted for winners in visual and written categories, with winners getting trophies and certificates in house assemblies.

Sarah Ashton, an English teacher and the organiser, said: “We were blown away by how much work the pupils put into the project.”
