Sadly a poor, indeed pathetic, audience on Saturday at the Wiltshire Music centre – after all, it’s modern stuff. And, equally inevitably, a highly rewarding evening from a group of supremely talented musicians.

A programme of contemporary music, by Britten (even masterpieces written when he was eight), Copland, Berg, performed by a total of six players, became a feast of virtuosity embracing all the emotions.

Shining through all was the infinitely flexible piano playing of Malcolm Wilson and the violin of Alexandra Wood. As an accompanist, and, sadly, only once as soloist, Wilson is one of those remarkable musicians who seems to be able to play absolutely anything: Just show me the dots...

Miss Wood likewise: Her athletic high register playing and breathy harmonics made the evening for me.
