Police have pledged to catch and prosecute the vandals responsible for a spate of graffiti on signs and property in Westbury.

The message “Heart U” has been sprayed repeatedly on road signs, postboxes, walls and private properties all over the town.

Police gave an update on their efforts to catch the culprits to the Area Board meeting and asked the community to watch out for any suspicious activity.

Wiltshire Council’s street scene officers and parish stewards, who were also at the meeting, have scrubbed off some signs only for the graffiti to reappear.

Community beat manager PC Gavin Hucks told the board: “We have to keep the upper hand on whoever is doing this, but there are no patterns, other than that it’s happening at night. We are committing extra resources and the Neighbourhood Police Team are targeting it as one of their top priorities. One of the things we need is for the community to note suspicious vehicles and people who are hanging around late at night. We want to catch them in the act.”

Inspector Alan Webb said: “It’s criminal damage and we want the person prosecuted.”

Anyone with information about the culprits, or who spots suspicious activity, should call police on 101.
