Marlborough readers will have their chance to put their own mark on this year’s LitFest with an initiative called The Big Town Read.

In association with The Reading Agency, the poet and novelist Jackie Kay will be speaking about her memoir chosen for World Book Night – Red Dust Road. This session will involve local book clubs in an open question-and-answer session with the author.

World Book Night took place in April when Ms Kay’s book was one of 20 chosen by an independent editorial committee to be distributed free to encourage people to read.

Red Dust Road is Ms Kay’s account of her 20-year search for her birth parents and life as a black, adopted child in Glasgow in the 1960s, hailed as “warm and spirited, as funny and full of life as her adoptive parents” (Literary Review).

Jackie Kay is Professor of Creative Writing at Newcastle University and lives in Manchester.

She was awarded an MBE in 2006 and will be appearing at 4pm on Sunday, September 29 at the town hall.
