A project to help Polish families living in Trowbridge has been awarded a grant by Wiltshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson.

Trowbridge Community Area Future (TCAF) plans to spend its £7,500 from the commissioner’s £1m innovation fund on two information events for Polish people.

The sessions will give members of the Polish community details of services available to them.

Figures from the last official Census, taken in 2011, showed that Trowbridge had 1,445 Polish-born residents.

Tracy Sullivan, of Trowbridge Community Area Future, said: “These events will enable Polish people to thrive and improve the overall community of Trowbridge.”

She added: “It is great that our application was successful and we believe it will be a real benefit.”

The first event has been scheduled for Wednesday, October 23, at County Hall, with a second booked at Trowbridge Civic Centre on Monday, October 28.

Representatives of Wiltshire Police, Citizens Advice Bureau and other organisations are expected to attend.

A directory of the services will also be printed, in both Polish and English, while some funds will be used to run a volunteer interpreter scheme, aiding those who live in the town but do not speak English.

The interpreters’ main role will be to help in communications between parents and schools.

Mr Macpherson gave out grants in the region of £400,000 through the innovation fund, shared between 12 causes across the county.

Meanwhile, Splash in Melksham, an organisation trying to reduce the instances of children committing anti-social behaviour by providing holiday activities, was given £38,448.

The money will be used to pay for the work of two people – a fundraising co-ordinator and a volunteering co-ordinator – on a part-time basis.
