Take sneak peek at new Stonehenge visitors' centre
Residents of Wiltshire have the chance to take a sneak peek behind the scenes of the new visitors’ centre at Stonehenge.
The main contractor working on the development, VINCI Construction UK, is hosting an Open Doors Weekend on September 27 and 28 so that members of the public can visit the construction site and learn more about the project.
The visitors’ centre is a £27million project led by English Heritage and aims to achieve the vision set out in the Stonehenge World Heritage Management Plan to restore the dignity of Stonehenge.
The new building is located at Airman’s Corner, 1.5miles away from the stone circle, and will include exhibition, education and café space.
Low-impact vehicles, carrying up to 900 visitors an hour, will operate a 10-minute shuttle service from the visitor building to the stones.
The centre is scheduled to open in late 2013 and once it is open the existing visitor’s facilities will be dismantled and the landscape around the stone circle will be restored.
The Open Weekend is a nationwide initiative, which invites members of the public from all across the UK to go around a construction site in their area.
It aims to demonstrate the diverse range of career opportunities that construction has to offer and the wide variety of skills that come together to make buildings and infrastructure.
It will also demonstrate the importance of construction to both the national and regional economies.
The Open Doors Weekend is the result of a partnership of four leading industry bodies, UK Construction Group (UKCG), CITB-ConstructionSkills, The Considerate Constructors Scheme and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
Stephen Ratcliffe, Director of UKCG, said: “Open Doors Weekend is a unique opportunity for the industry to display the complexity, excitement and scope of modern construction projects and give people a taste of what it’s really like to work in the industry.
“But places will be limited so I’d encourage anyone interested to go on the site and register to secure their place to avoid disappointment.”
