Hotel refurbishment almost completed

IT HAS been 19 years since the Marriott first came to Swindon, taking over the former Holiday Inn building on Piper’s Way.
In this time, the way the hotel looks has changed, with refurbishments taking place at the restaurant, bar and health club areas and a second refurbishment now being completed to all 156 bedrooms.
The Marriott also boasts a highly trained, committed housekeeping team, led by executive housekeeper Caroline Penrose, made up of 30 people who provide 24 hour support to the hotel.
Since the hotel opened its doors in 1994, the team has made over one million beds, spending almost seven years and 10 months changing sheets, pillows, and duvet covers.
Guests have also used 218,880 toilet rolls in this time, which if laid out end to end from the hotel’s front door in Old Town, would reach into the centre of Moscow, Russia.
Caroline, who has been in the hotel business for 35 years, was part of the team that opened the Marriott Swindon in 1994, having previously been assistant housekeeper when it was owned by the Holiday Inn.
She said: “I used to visit Swindon regularly as a child to have tea with my godmother, but I never thought I’d end up living here. When I was asked to come to Swindon to be part of the team here, it was a new challenge, but not one that I thought I would stay with for so long. The team here is excellent – everyone is very committed to the hotel and standards are excellent.
“Some of the room attendants on my team have been here for 18 years. It can get very busy and demanding making sure that all 156 are ready each night for guests and everything is completed in the Marriott way.”
