Campus plans raise fears for 125-year-old Westbury pool
A consultation looking at three possible options for the community campus in Westbury was launched at the area board meeting last week, with concerns raised about the future of Westbury Swimming Pool.
Depending on what option is chosen by the public at the end of the second phase of consultation in November, the community campus could potentially see the closure of the town’s 125-year old pool.
The results from the first phase of the consultation showed that 91 per cent of people wanted improved indoor sports and leisure facilities and 86 per cent supported the inclusion of a swimming pool in the new campus.
Westbury Amateur Swimming Club head coach Stephen Pyne, said: “There is only one option that keeps the pool and I would be hugely disappointed if it was to close. I think a lot of people would feel the same, but all we can do is vote for the option that saves the pool.”
Westbury Community Operations Board, set up by Wiltshire Council to consult on the campus development, presented the three options to the board on August 15.
Mike Parker, from the Westbury COB, said: “There are three options. The first would see the pool stay open as part of a three-site campus.
“Under option two, the pool closes and a new pool is opened in Leighton Sports Centre as part of a two-site campus.
“In option three the pool would go wherever the new single site campus was built, although no site has been identified yet.
“The whole point of this is to see what people want. What we hope they will do is to weigh up the pros and the cons and come to a decision about the best option.
“People in Westbury are very fond of the pool. It’s a beautiful building and if an option was chosen where the pool was closed, part of our role is to consider alternative options for different ways to use the building.”
The aim of the campus proposals is to bring together council services, the police and leisure facilities.
The Westbury community campus is one of 20 planned across the county.
