‘Villages’ are under discussion
RESIDENTS can air their views and learn more about the 6,000 home Eastern Villages development during a special meeting next week.
An extra consultation event about the project has been scheduled in Covingham for Monday.
This drop-in session will be held at Covingham School from 6pm, and council officers from highways, planning and design will be present.
The Eastern Villages represent 6,000 homes being built within five new villages to the east of the A419, a new district centre with a Sainsbury’s, new offices and commercial space for businesses and jobs along with new schools and leisure facilities.
“The council has been consulting on a draft plan for the future Eastern Villages development for eight weeks, two weeks longer than normal to ensure people on summer holiday also have the same opportunity to comment,” said Dale Heenan, who represents the Covingham and Dorcan wards.
“There is cross political party support for the councils approach to housing development in Swindon and the approach to tackling development to the east of the A419,” said Coun Heenan.
“A cross party committee of councillors voted to support the draft plan for consultation. There still remain some challenges to solve but this document sets out clearly and explicitly what is involved, and by being upfront with developers they know exactly what they need to do.
“This development has been on the cards for 30 years.
“As the cabinet member for strategic planning at Swindon Council I am determined that when it does happen that Swindon has a high quality development which has the right infrastructure for our roads and reduces the risk of flooding to existing communities.”
