Financial reports just released by North Wiltshire District Council will make difficult reading for the action groups set up to save leisure centres in Wootton Bassett, Cricklade and Calne.

The council warned last week that the protesters leading campaigns to save the centres planned for closure in March should use their heads rather than their hearts.

Now the reports have the stark facts. The report show sthat Cricklade's centre is due to end up £168,605 down at the end of April if the current year's trend continues. It had leaked £98,353 by the end of October.

Lime Kiln in Wootton Bassett will end up £203,062 down if the same rate of loss carries on for the rest of the financial year - up to the end of October it had lost £118,453.

The leisure centres were transferred from the council to a company called North Wilts Leisure Limited in 2000.

Last month it was decided to "mothball" the three centres as an emergency measure.

The centres were due to close by the end of the year, but the deadline has been extended to March next year while the council and community groups see if a solution can be reached to keep them open.

The new accounts show they have consistently made a loss.

The council's scrutiny and overview committee will discuss the matter on Monday in Chippenham.

Look like the recent warnings by North Wilts. British National Party have been proven correct! Of course no heads will roll at NWDC for this shambles following next Monday's council meeting - no one is apparently accountable for anything antmore - therein resides the problem!

Read the report from Strategic Leisure Limited. The company who carried out the review of the centre's operations points the finger at the very people who brought them in - NWDC. NWLL don't get off lightly either. How come an organisation so totally inept at managing their finances and their staff still has a contract left ?? The contract runs until 2010 - heaven only knows what mess the remaining centre's will be in by then if this madness is allowed to continue. I echo Mr Essex's comments - NWDC will squirm out of it somehow - its up to us, the taxpayers to ensure someone is made to account for this gross mismanagement and waste of public funds. The report also highlights the lack of efficient staff performance management systems - clearly the system isn't working if they allowed 'sacked' directors to leave with payments totalling £225,000 - what a bonus for doing such a bad job !

Jo,

Your figure is vastly incorrect on payment to "sacked" directors by a couple of hundred thousand! The majority of the fee quoted was to pay the legal and consutlantcy fees surrounding the debacle and the subsequent fee to the interim management team Wycombe Leisure.
If the management tram prior to October 2005 did such a bad job then why why were they not dismissed with no pay off?
The management team run the sites at the direction of the NWLL Board with whom the contract exisits with NWDC not the management team.
I find the information released by NWDC rather misleading. Where are the reports regarding the precious five years of contract with NWLL, the levels of funding and contractual monitorung by NWDC? What has occured in the last few months - as released by NWDC - has not led to the current situation - the relarionaship over the term of the contract and desicions made surely are as important to reach the accountability you so correctly call for?
INteresting that for the previosu six years of the contract NWDC has kept all dealings with the Trust striclty confidential but now that they are in trouble they release documentation to lay blame elsehwre. Let us see ALL the documentation NWDC. Let us see ALL the Board Reports NWLL and then lets see who was incompetent and allowed the scandoulous situation to occur.
Whilst managememtn may have been at fault - there have been many managers, 5 CEO's in five years! - managememnt can only advise and report to NWDC - however NWDC hold the purse strings - if ot has been reported to them that facitlites and services are in a failing state then surely as our custodians they should listen to the managers? Also it is NWLL Board that direct NWLL not the staff or the management. I agree with your comment Jo but lets see ALL the information. I think that Strategic Leisures Report says it all - now why did we the residents get here?!!
