North Wiltshire District Council will reconsider its decision to close leisure centres in Calne, Cricklade and Wootton Bassett, in the wake of comments from its overview and scrutiny committee.

The executive committee will meet again tonight, after its decision was referred back to it on Monday.

Members of overview and scrutiny have asked officers to investigate what capacity neighbouring centres, such as those in Swindon and Cirencester, have to cope with clubs, schools and people left without provision in their towns.

Chairman Toby Sturgis said it was important to see how the impact on those living in the east of the district could be lessened.

The committee also said the council should investigate reports of how much Kennet District Council invested in Devizes Leisure Centre to generate £500,000 of income, to see if they could do something similar.

Why on earth is the council considering keeping these three centres open. As a taxpayer I am fed up with paying high council tax for poor quality services. Why can’t people realise that if these centres were popular with the majority they would not need to be closed. People just don’t use them and they are in an awful state, just read the maintenance report on them. If the communities think they can run them themselves then good luck but I will not pay a local tax to keep them open. On another note I hope that the people of Calne are not expecting Councillor O’Gorman to continue to support them, as soon as it suite her politically she will change her views, again!

well mr anon, are you even a taxpayer, as you don't have a name. If you looked into the history of these centres, rather than just the bottom line of the accounts, you will see that there have been problems with the running of these centres from day 1. They seemed to be running without reported problems prior to NWLL. The problem here is the bad management, council inability to control/project manage this fiasco and that hundreds of thousands of pounds have been spent on consultancy, paying off management. These trusts are commonly problematic throughout the country. However, the centres in West Wilts, many of which are older, run successfully. These centres are block booked by local schools, yet the LEA has (documented and admitted by NWDC) pay enough for this. Well why not. Instead of spouting your NIMBY attitude, be man enough to put your name to your comments. Come to Lime Kiln and see the 300+ junior club which will disband if this centre closes.

Mr King without wanting to get into a pointless argument I am going to stay anonymous for good reasons that I am not prepared to share with you.
Have you ever been to Lime Kiln or Cricklade outside of the hours of 16.00-18.00? They simply are not used enough and they are also in a poor state or repair from where NWDC have neglected them. I would like to ask you to prove that the sites in west wilts are performing well. The management company who run these sites, DC leisure, is a large national company who are able to take losses in some areas because they are pilfering money from other local councils. I do not believe that the situation is very rosy either on that side of the county. All across the country councils are shutting leisure centres and the main reason for this is that most of them were built in the seventies and have had little or no investment. We are not alone and must face up to the harsh realities; these sites are quiet 75% of the time.
My main point stands; if people used these facilities then they would not be closing. I find it laughable when people who use the centre for 1 hour a week playing badminton become outraged that “their centre” is closing.
As a community it is time to get behind the three remaining sites and ensure they are successful, lets all take an active role. Why don’t we tell NWLL & WLL when they are getting it wrong and let’s support them when they get it right.

It is now down to us to ensure we still have leisure provision in North Wilts

I'd love to know where Anon lives. I don't want to get behind the three remaining sites - I live miles away from any of them and don't want to drive myself or my kids half way across the county - why should I. There is a perfectly good centre very near to where I live. Yes, it has seen better days - and whose fault is that ? Lets get it clear - it isn't lack of use - its lack of proper management that has caused this problem. The people are willing and present, NWLL just wouldn't know how to manage a sports centre properly if someone jumped up and bit them on the nose. !!
