Thousands of children and parents across Wiltshire could face disruption due to a teachers' strike next Thursday.

The one-day strike has been called by the NUT and NASUWT over a number of disputes, including wages, pensions and working hours, and headteachers will be making decisions on whether to stay open or not based on the number of union members in their schools.

John Bentley School, Calne, has announced it will be closed to all pupils next Thursday, while Pewsey Vale School will only be open to Year 11 pupils.

St John’s Marlborough will make a decision and post it on their website tomorrow, while Malmesbury School have yet to make a decision, and headteacher Tim Gilson said: “I know it is very difficult for parents but all we can say at the moment is that we have the vast majority of our teaching staff in the two unions that are going on strike.

“Parents should make arrangements in case we need to close, which we will only do if we cannot safely staff the school.”

Royal Wootton Bassett School is monitoring the situation and will make an announcement via its website nearer the time.

Elsewhere, Kingdown School in Warminster will be closed, while Trowbridge’s John of Gaunt School will be open only for Year 11, 12 and 13 pupils.

The Corsham School and Melksham Oak Community School have yet to make a decision and Fergus Stewart, headteacher of St Laurence School in Bradford on Avon, will make a decision on Friday.

Richard Gamble, Wiltshire Council portfolio holder for schools, said: "We are aware that strike action by some teachers who are members of certain unions may affect Wiltshire schools next week.

"In order to minimise the disruption and inconvenience this could cause to children's education, to families and to other teachers, we have been offering advice and guidance to schools to help their leadership teams decide if their school is able to remain open."

Parents are advised to contact their schools for individual updates
